Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Breakfast at Tiffany's DVD

Paramount Pictures
Starring:
Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen
Also Starring: Orangey
Directed by: Blake Edwards

Synopsis: A wonderful telling of Truman Capote’s novella (with a vastly different ending from the original story!)  Paul Varjack (George Peppard) is a struggling writer who is being “kept” by an older woman (Patricia Neal.)  He moves into an apartment building and meets his downstairs neighbor, the outrageously free-spirited Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn.)  His world is swept upside down by this wild girl and despite all odds he falls in love with her.  But can she give up her gold-digging, no-strings-attached existence to be able to love anyone in return?

Featured Feline: There is little doubt that the character of Cat makes a lasting impression in this film.  Holly Golightly takes care of Cat but makes it clear that she does not own him, that she doesn’t own anything.  It’s an important representation of the way she approaches life in general.  Played by the veteran orange tabby named Orangey (who also starred in several other films we will cover on this blog,) Cat is seen throughout the film and plays a major role in the unforgettable final scene.  You may want to get your handkerchief out for the final few minutes.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Kitty Carnage Warning! There is one scene in the film where Holly suddenly seems to go crazy, screaming and tearing up her own apartment, and Cat is unforunately caught up in the melee and thrown to the wall, screeching.  It’s a disturbing scene but no actual harm seems to come to the cat actor.

Final Mewsings: Cats bring people together, even in the rain.
