Cat Out of the Bag Alert!  This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Marion (Julie Delpy) and her boyfriend Jack (Adam Goldberg) end their vacation in Europe with a two day stop in Paris to visit with Marion’s off-beat family.

Featured Feline: It is explained that the New York couple stopped briefly in Paris to drop off their cat, a long-haired tuxedo Maine Coon named Jean Luc, with Marion’s parents.

Upon returning, Marion and Jack stay in the apartment Marion owns above her parents’ flat.  When Marion sees the cat she is shocked at how heavy he is and finds out that her mother Anna (Marie Pillet) has been feeding him foie gras.  This starts a family row of sorts.

Marion’s mother insists that Marion’s father, Jeannot (Albert Delpy) doesn’t like the cat, which is funny since he is wearing an apron with a similar cat on it.

Marion is also holding Jean Luc as the family, including Marion’s sister Rose (Alexia Landeau), gather to look at the pictures Jack has taken on their trip.

Later in the film, Marion and Jack are going to make love but have a fight and Marion announces she is sleeping with the cat, pulling Jean Luc close to her.

Jean Luc is still on the bed in the morning when Marion has to jump up to address an emergency downstairs.

The last time Jean Luc is seen is when Jack is working in the apartment and sees a text come in on Marion’s phone.  Jean Luc is lying on the floor and Jack tells the cat not to tell “mom” before looking at Marion’s phone.  Anna interrupts and at the end of the scene she takes Jean Luc downstairs with her.

Jean Luc was played by Julie Delpy’s pet cat Max, which fits since her mother and father played those roles in the film as well.  Delpy was quoted in one article as saying, “It was so much easier to use my cat, to the crew and everything, than to rent a cat.  I have worked with those rental cats, and it’s just a mess.”

Jean Luc would return for the sequel, 2 Days in New York, and although Max is not listed in the film’s credits he does return to reprise the role.  Julie Delpy was interviewed in detail about her cat Max at the time of the film’s release for Page Six.

Purr Blur: There is also a quick photograph of a Siamese cat shown amongst the pictures taken by Marion as a child.

Final Mewsings: Cats enjoy the finer things in life, including foie gras.
