Cat Out of the Bag Alert!  This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: A day and night in the lives of writer Giovanni Pontano (Marcello Mastroianni) and his wife Lidia (Jeanne Moreau) who are dealing with the impending death of a friend and feeling introspective about the status of their relationship.

Purr Blur: In the middle of the film Lidia is walking with Signora Gherardini whose party she and her husband are attending.  They stop and look off screen at something.  The Signora notes, “He’s been staring that statue in the eye all day.  Maybe he sees some resemblence, or he’s waiting for it to wake up.  Who can know a cat’s mind?”  We then see a multicolored cat looking at the head of a statue on the ground.

La Notte - cat staring at head of statue

Technically this cat is about as opposite from a Purr Blur as one can get since it is just a still frame of the cat looking at the head, but since it’s only on the screen a few seconds we have categorized it as such.

Final Mewsings: Cats can usually win staring contests but maybe not in this case.
