English Title: Fanny and Alexander
Cinematograph AB
Starring:
Bertil Guve, Pernilla Allwin, Jan Malmsjö
Directed by: Ingmar Bergman

Synopsis: Ingmar Bergman’s ambitious television mini-series (cut down to three hours for theatrical release) centers around two Swedish siblings in the early 1900’s, Fanny (Pernilla Allwin) and Alexander (Bertil Guve) and their extensive family experiences.

Purr Blur: In one scene, Isak Jacobi (Erland Josephson) pays a call on Bishop Edvard Vergerus (Jan Malmsjö), seeking to purchase a chest (with an ulterior motive).  As his sleigh pulls up to the house a black cat can be seen running across the path.  The cat pauses at the door of the house, looking up as if expecting the upper half of a door to be open, and then moves behind a statue.

Kitty Cameo: Later after Isak has paid for the chest, Bishop Vergerus goes into another room to count the money.  The black cat is now sitting on his desk.  The scene in the television version runs just slightly longer with the cat being startled by the Bishop opening a drawer before signing the bill of sale.

Final Mewsings: Cats don’t mind monetary actions as long as they are quiet.
