Cat Out of the Bag Alert!  This review contains spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: One night in the lives of several Generation X-ers and a bizarre drug deal gone completely awry told from several points of view.

Kitty Cameo: When Ronna (Sarah Polley) and Mannie (Nathan Bexton) return to Todd’s (Timothy Olyphant) apartment to get Claire (Katie Holmes), Mannie has previously taken two very strong ecstasy tablets and is tripping out.  Todd’s black Persian cat appears and Mannie imagines the cat is talking to him via its mind.

The cat says it can hear Mannie’s thoughts and gives him a suggestion for a famous dead person whose name begins with an ‘X’.

Later in the film Todd and Claire are on the steps of Todd’s apartment when the cat appears, coming down the stairs.  The cat stops and sits on the step beside them.  Todd wonders how the cat got out but they soon learn exactly why.

The black Persian was a trained cat brought in to play the part.  Director Doug Liman considered using an untrained cat (who makes a later cameo and is mentioned below) and even considered dyeing that cat black to fit the description in the script but was glad that he ultimately made the decision to use a trained cat instead.

Purr Blur: Near the end of the film Claire and Ronna are searching for Mannie where Ronna has left him the night before, in an alley.  An alley cat is seen crawling into the space where he is hidden.  The cat seen briefly in this scene is named Princess Leah Lucky Buttons and belonged to Nathan Bexton (it is stated on IMDb that she retired from acting and lived in Montreal, Canada with actress Pina Di Blasi).  It’s interesting to note that Princess Leah Lucky Buttons received a screen credit while the actual cat actor does not.

Final Mewsings: Should non-union cat actors get screen credit?
