Warner Bros.
Starring:
Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Bette Davis, Frank McHugh
Directed by: Alfred E. Green

Synopsis: Bill Keller (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) and his buddy Toodles (Frank McHugh) are ex-Marine pilots struggling to seek employment in New York City after World War I.  They join forces with a tough gal named Alabama (Bette Davis) to make ends meet but they all end up falling under the influence of a hood (Leo Carillo).

Kitty Cameo: Early in the film after Bill and Alabama meet on a park bench they are walking home with some meager groceries.  As they walk down the street Alabama stops and points out something to Bill.  We see a black cat crouched down on the sidewalk with something in its mouth.

A closer shot reveals that the cat has a small fish wrapped in brown paper.

The director cuts to an interesting eye-level position off the sidewalk to show the cat crouching as Alabama and Bill approach.

Bill places his hat over the cat’s head in order to steal the fish.

The cat seems strangely nonplussed about the hat having been over its head but it is confused as to what happened to his fish, licking at the pavement where it used to be (it’s possible something tasty was placed there to keep the cat actor in position).

Final Mewsings: You have to stoop pretty low to steal a fish from a cat.
