Our Gang (1922)

Hal Roach Studios
Starring:
Anna Mae Bilson, Jackie Condon, Mickey Daniels
Directed by: Robert F. McGowan

Synopsis: The very first Our Gang short to be filmed and the third to be released.  Mary Jane (Anna Mae Bilson) is a girl who wins the affections of several of the boys.  But when her mother’s store is in danger of being foreclosed upon by an unscrupulous rival merchant, the gang steps in to help.

Kitty Cameo: Only a portion of this original film survives and so it’s interesting to note that the very first image of the very first Our Gang short to be filmed is that of a mother cat with her kittens.  We can only guess as to what came before, but when the surviving footage begins a dog is moving away from the cat who is protecting her kittens inside a crate.  It’s possible the dog was looking for something to eat and thought the cats might have something he wanted (in the next moment the dog spots what looks like a cow’s teats and starts suckling one but it turns out to be a rubber glove hanging from a clothes line.)

Our Gang - Mama cat and kittens in a crate with dog

Final Mewsings: A hungry dog could try suckling a Mama cat . . . once.
