Judy Garland, Marjorie Main, Joan Carroll
Directed by: Vincente Minnelli

Synopsis: The lush, colorful Minnelli film about a family of four girls and their trials and tribulations in St. Louis, Missouri at the time of the World’s Fair in the early twentieth century.

Kitty Cameo: In an early scene in the film the second youngest daughter, Agnes (Joan Carroll) looks into the kitchen from the back screen door and asks the housekeeper, Katie (Marjorie Main) if she’s seen her cat.  Katie says she might have kicked the cat into the cellar if it got in her way, adding, “I could hear her spine hit on every step.”  Agnes bursts into the kitchen threatening to kill Katie if she hurt her cat, which Katie nonchalantly brushes off before pointing out that the cat is sitting on a nearby chair.  Katie runs to the cat crying, “Poor Lady Babbie” as she picks up the tabby cat and sits in the chair with Lady Babbie in her lap.

Lady Babbie isn’t seen again although Agnes insists she’s taking the cat to New York with them when Father announces they will be moving.

Final Mewsings: A cat would rather win a blue ribbon at the fair than have one tied around their neck.
