The Charley Chase Collection Too DVD

Hal Roach Studios
Starring:
Charley Chase, Stuart Holmes, Mildred June
Directed by: Leo McCarey

Synopsis: Charley (Charley Chase) is a man who’s afraid of dogs and is chased into a phone booth by one where he “meets” a young woman about to be married to a boorish Duke (Stuart Holmes) against her will.  Charley ends up getting a job as a butler in her home and does his best to rescue the girl while having to care for the family dog named Duke (played by Buddy.)

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Near the end of the short film Charley has arranged to give the girl a signal by howling like a dog, not realizing that two other teams plan the same signal at the same time.  The first time Charley gives the howl he is answered by a tiny little kitten mewing on the bottom of the stairs at his feet.  Charley is confused at first then sees the kitten.

At the head of the stairs Charley howls again and is shocked to see three people respond.  The girl’s mother (Josephine Crowell) steps out of her room to investigate and catches Charley howling again.  Embarrassed, he picks up the kitten by the scruff and explains, “He’s got a voice like a sea-lion.”

After this Charley takes the kitten back downstairs and sets him down.  The kitten is not seen after that but the cuddly little actor definitely made his mark considering he had the very talented Buddy showing off his skills as well.

Final Mewsings: Kittens may not howl but their tiny meows command attention!
