Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: English schoolteacher Gwen Mayfield (Joan Fontaine) suffers a nervous breakdown after a frightful experience with a Witch Doctor in Africa.  She seems on the road to recovery when she takes a job at a school in a small English town, but it turns out her experiences with the occult are just beginning.

Featured Feline: Almost as soon as Gwen arrives at her new cottage home in the small town, a grey cat walks in her front door.  She immediately takes to the cat and adopts it as her own.

The Witches

After Gwen visits an older woman named Granny Rigg (Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies) the cat shows up outside.  Gwen explains that she has adopted the cat and is thinking about calling him Smokey.  Granny Rigg explains the cat has been hers for five years and is named Vesper.  As Gwen walks away, Granny Riggs tells Vesper to “go after her”, which the cat does.

Later in the film when Gwen is investigating at the ruins of the church she sees a strange doll with the likeness of one of her female students gyrating on the floor.  When she opens the body portion of the doll, Vesper steps out.
