Hausu DVD

English Title: House
Toho Company
Starring:
Kimiko Ikegami, Miki Jinbo, Kumiko Ohba, Ai Matsubara, Yôko Minamida
Directed by: Nobuhiko Ôbayashi

Synopsis: Oshare (Kimiko Ikegami) and her six schoolgirl friends decide to spend the summer at the quaint farmhouse owned by her Aunt (Yôko Minamida) but things quickly spiral strangely out of control as the girls are murdered one by one, seemingly by the house itself!

Featured Feline: The white Persian cat named Blanche (or Snowflake depending on the source) is a prominent plot point in the movie.  Blanche shows up on Oshare’s doorstep and no one questions it when they arrive at her aunt’s house and learn the cat belongs to the aunt.

There is even a sweet portrait of Blanche on the wall of the house.  Blanche is often present during the girls’ deaths and even seems to be manipulating the activity (or the ghost is manipulating the activity through Blanche) which we see by a twinkle in the cat’s eyes.  The portrait later morphs into a twisted version near the film’s climax (which is the artwork seen on the film’s publicity poster.)

Final Mewsings: If your cats eyes start twinkling in different colors, stay away from the piano.
