Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) is a mute custodial worker at a research institute who befriends the latest acquisition, a human-like amphibious creature.
Cat Cattle Call: Elisa lives in an apartment above a movie theater and her neighbor is a man named Giles (Richard Jenkins) who owns numerous cats. The cats are seen throughout the film in his apartment. It’s not clear exactly how many cats live in the apartment. Two notable cats are a grey and white one and an orange and white one. They are seen more than the others, which include a calico and a white cat with black markings.
At one point Giles shooes a cat off a jacket, calling the cat Thor.
When they bring the amphibian man to Elisa’s apartment, he wanders over into Giles’ apartment at one point. While looking at the television he notices a gray and white long-haired cat named Pandora who ends up hissing at him. The amphibian man hisses back.
Kitty Carnage Warning! Giles hears the cat screech in his apartment and finds the amphibian man has eaten the cat’s head off. Giles later explains to Elisa that he does not blame the creature, as it is wild. As Elisa runs to find the amphibian man, Giles looks at a cat sitting near the dead body of Pandora and comments, “You’re lucky.”
After finding the Amphibian Man and bringing him back he is seen making friends with the cats and even petting them. Giles tells him not to play with the kitties.
Final Mewsings: Usually it’s cats who bite the heads off fish!
