Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film.

Synopsis: Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are genetic engineers who experiment in splicing together the DNA of different animals in the hopes of creating something of medical value.  When they are told to cease their work, they continue in secret, taking it a step further by splicing in human DNA and creating an intelligent, and potentially dangerous, hybrid they name Dren (Delphine Chanéac.)

Featured Feline: In the latter half of the film Dren is growing into adolescence, so they move her to a barn to hide her from prying eyes.  While there Dren finds a farm cat and keeps it as a pet, taking comfort in its presence to fight her loneliness.  When Elsa finds out that Dren has been keeping the cat, she takes it away from her, breaking Dren’s heart.

Kitty Carnage Warning! Elsa eventually has a change of heart and brings the cat back to Dren, saying “It’s nice to have a pet.”  Still angry, Dren promptly kills the cat to spite Elsa.

Final Mewsings: Don’t take cats away from angry hybrid creatures and then try to give them back.
