Cat Out of the Bag Alert!  This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Based on the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. Fireman C.D. Bales (Steve Martin) falls for beautiful astronomer Roxanne (Daryl Hannah) but finds himself in the awkward situation of helping her to fall in love with another man.

Cat Burglars (Scene Stealers): When we first see Roxanne she is calling out the window of her rental home for her cat Grover. Grover is a large ginger-colored cat who is sitting on the railing on the porch.

Roxanne steps outside to get Grover and the door shuts behind her, trapping her robe and locking her outside.

Roxanne ends up having to take off the robe to look for another way inside. When she disrobes, Grover lets out a screech (dubbed in). Later after C.D. has managed to let Roxanne back into her house, she retrieves the robe that was caught in the door. Grover is still sitting on the porch railing and then nonchalantly walks into the house.

There is a quick glimpse of Grover as he passes through the kitchen behind C.D. and then he does not reappear for the rest of the movie.

The other notable cat in the film is Snowball, who is stuck up a tree when the inept fire department shows up and attempts a rescue.

C.D. casually takes a can of cat food and a can opener out of his pocket. He opens the can and calls to Snowball, who scurries down to eat the food.

Purr Blur:  While it can hardly even be seen, C.D. owns a tabby cat as well. The cat can be heard letting out a small meow as C.D. apparently is reaching back behind the couch to pet him while helping Chris (Rick Rossovich) compose his first letter to Roxanne.

When C.D. stands up the cat’s backside can be seen a bit more clearly.

In case there is any doubt, there is one clear shot of the cat during a montage scene in which C.D. is composing and mailing letters to Roxanne. The cat is only on screen for a few seconds.

Final Mewsings: Cats apparently screech when they see celestial bodies.
