Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: A cacophony of fairy tales get mashed when a kindly grandmother tells a story.
Cartoon Cat: The story focuses on a girl named Cinderella, or Cindy for short, who is living with an evil stepmother / witch and the woman’s ugly daughters. As in the original, Cindy is bossed around and made to do all of the work. A cat she calls Puss is often with her as she slaves away in the kitchen.
Puss is tormented by the witch’s two dogs which chase him around, usually causing problems for the witch.
The witch orders Cindy to do a bunch of chores overnight, pushing over a water pitcher which lands on Puss in the process.
In a short song Puss sings one line but otherwise does not talk.
Cindy is getting tired while chopping cabbage and Puss helps by picking up some stray pieces and putting them in the barrel.
Puss then plays with a head of cabbage which has fallen on the ground.
Finally Cindy passes out from exhaustion after telling Puss that he’s the only friend she has.
While Cindy sleeps, the grandmother she doesn’t know she has (the teller of the story) comes in and does the chores. Puss is comfortable with the grandmother and goes back to sleep.
At one point Grandma drops a cabbage into Puss’ water bowl, splashing the cat and waking up one of the step sisters.
Later Puss gets a treat as Cindy milks the cow.
Puss yawns when getting sleepy as Cindy listens to her music box and dreams.
The witch discovers Grandma doing Cindy’s chores and tries to attack her, but her dogs are chasing Puss, who gets underfoot.
Puss runs up a tree, distracting the dogs from chasing Grandma.
For some reason Puss disappears from this point on, only turning up briefly at the very end when everyone is living happily ever after.
Final Mewsings: Best friends don’t just disappear partway into the movie!
