Synopsis: Dr. Lee Cardwell (Paul Muni), nicknamed Dr. Socrates for his interest in philosophy, is a small town doctor who is roped into treating a gangster and his notorious mob.

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Cardwell is protective of a young woman named Josephine Gray (Ann Dvorak) who was picked up as a hitchhiker by the gang and shot in a subsequent bank robbery. To protect Josephine he has her stay at his house to recuperate. He returns home one night to find her on the porch holding a tiny calico kitten.

Josephine explains that the kitten has adopted her and she holds it throughout this scene. However the kitten is not seen or mentioned again in the film.
