The News Magazine of the Screen – Vol. 7, Issue 2 (1956)

Pathe News / Standard Oil Company

Synopsis: A collection of news stories compiled by Standard Oil include footage of the U.S. Presidential race between Eisenhower and Stevenson, a devastating flood in Australia, a typhoon in Japan, the flight of a 50-year-old plane, restoration work on the Coliseum in Rome, bomb measurement-taking of the Earth’s crust, a dam which ruins an Indian fishing hole, a “Vulcan” gun, a Canadian family of 62 and a tour of Hamlet’s Castle, plus a dramatization of the first oil well.

Reality Cat: Our interest is in the second segment about the flooding on the Murray River in Australia. Damage from the flood is filmed and at one point a tabby cat is seen swimming through the water and climbing up onto a post. The cat actually appears to be wading through the water, which doesn’t seem terribly high at that point.

The cat then tries to jump from the post to a nearby house but just misses and falls back into the water.
