Crossed Wires (2011)

Music Artist: Superchunk

Synopsis: A cat is fitted with a video camera and then gets into mischief but not the kind you might imagine.

Featured Feline: A white cat with gray and tabby markings is the one fitted with the video camera. Several shots of the cat are included at the beginning and end of the video.

According to the video’s director Whitey McConnaughy, the cat was the “band’s friend’s cat” and didn’t really want to be a video star, hiding away during the shoot.

In one shot the cat sees himself in a mirror in a bar bathroom. The non-acting cat was taken on location for this shot as well and someone made sure no one came in so the cat wouldn’t escape. All of the shots from the cat’s camera point of view were naturally shot with fake whiskers and paws.

Kitty Cameo:  There are also several shots of a tortoiseshell cat sitting by the band while they are performing.

Straw Dogs (2011)

Screen Gems
Starring:
 James Marsden, Kate Bosworth
Directed by: Rod Lurie

Cat Out of the Bag Alert!  This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Reboot of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah film finds movie scriptwriter David Sumner (James Marsden) and his wife Amy (Kate Bosworth) facing violence from a group of redneck locals.

Kitty Cameo: In the original film, Amy had a tortoiseshell cat named Kitty. This time the cat is white and is named Flutie (for the football player?) She is seen calling to Flutie in one scene but the cat doesn’t show up until she is in David’s study. The cat leaps out of nowhere onto Amy’s lap with a screech, startling David in a classic spring-loaded cat moment.

“Isn’t he adorable?” Amy asks, holding Flutie up to David. “A real sweetheart!”

“Yeah, tell that to the mice,” David scoffs.

Later Flutie is seen walking towards the wardrobe.

When David puts his clothes away, he sees Flutie in a basket in the wardrobe. Off screen the cat hisses at him.

Flutie is also seen briefly sitting on the counter of the kitchen beside David when Amy walks in. She shooes the cat off the counter.

Kitty Carnage Warning!  As in the original, David opens the wardrobe to find Flutie hanging from the light cord. We can barely see the cat when he opens the door but when Amy goes to look we see the cat hanging clearly. This time, however, it is pretty clear it is a fake cat which was used for the shot.

Final Mewsings: Cats apparently don’t fare any better in reboots.
